Four Borden Brothers Raised

On May 18, 1923, the Shenandoah Herald published an article titled “Regular Meeting Cassia Lodge”. The article mentioned four brothers being raised together while four of their cousins were also present the lodge, of which three were from Unity Lodge. A large number of lodges, 19, were represented at the meeting – and 19 participants (including the District Deputy Grand Master) were from Unity lodge itself.

At a most interesting meeting of Cassia Lodge, No. 142, held Monday night, a most unusual occurrence marked the meeting as one unique in the history of Masonry, in the State and probably one that has never before been known in Masonry - four brothers being raised at this time, B. F. Borden, Jr., Gilbert L. Borden, C. D. Borden and O. G. Borden. Another unusual occurrence was the fact that four brothers, cousins of the four Borden brothers, were also present in the lodge at the same time, J. L., J. B. and O. W. Borden, of Unity Lodge, of Front Royal, Va., and H.  L. Borden, of SPurmont Lodge, of Strasburg, Va. Out of town lodges were represented by 12 members of Hunter Lodge, No. 135, of Edinburg, Va., 19 representatives from Unity Lodge, No. 146, of Front Royal, Va., in fact 19 lodges were represented, including Bridgewater, Edinburg, Mt. Jackson, Front Royal, Berryville, Winchester, Strasburg, Alexandria, Richmond, Altoona, Pa., Portsmouth, N. H., West Cornwall, Conn., Blacksburg, Va., Baltimore, Md, Clinton, S. C., and Washington, D. C. The address of welcome to the visitors was delivered by Mr. Joseph B. Clower, and Mr. W. M. Calvert was toastmaster. Those who responded to toasts were - D. D. Graham, of Bridgewater, D. D. Grand Master, District No. 6, P. M. S. Bird, Worshipful Master, Mt. Jackson Lodge, P. M. Shirey, D. D. Grand Master of Unity Lodge, Front Royal, L. H. Morgan, D. D. Grand Master District No. 3, Berryville, T. G. McKillup, of Altoona, Pa., E. D. Clark, H. R. Davidson, W. T. Brundick, J. P. Grim, J. D. Turnham, James Borden, M. S. Coffman, G. F. Borden and N. S. Miller.
