Front Royal Lodges Exhibit Fraternity

By Alma Little

The spirit behind Front Royal’s “New Deal” program is: marked by the same quality of cooperation and civic loyalty that has long been fostered by her Fraternal organizations.

As far back as 1799, the ideals of Freemasonry were introduced in Front Royal by the formation of Chester Lodge No. 61, chartered on December 11 of that year. The first officers were: John Hickman, Worshipful Master; William Reynolds, Senior Warden; Moses ; Payne, Junior Warden; Abner Pollard; Secretary; Origonal Wroe, Treasurer; Edward Newman, Senior Deacon; Samuel Turner, Junior Deacon; Robert Simpson, Tyler. This lodge, however, became dormant in 1809, and it was not until December 10, 1816 when Front Royal Lodge No. 102 was chartered, that Freemasonry again became an active factor in the life of Front Royal. This lodge in turn became dormant in 1826 and was revived by the Grand Lodge on December 15, 1840, which became extinct in 1857. No record can be found of an active lodge in Front Royal from 1857 to June 23, 1899 at which time Unity Lodge No. 146 received its charter. This lodge continues to be active having at its last annual report 135 members. The present officers are: Thomas W. Downing, Worshipful Master; S. M. Boyd, Jr., Senior Warden; Robert J. Turner, Junior Warden; George N. Buck, Treasurer; L. B. Cary, Secretary; W. C. Deming, Senior Deacon; O. Van Dusen, Junior Deacon; W. G. Dearing, Chaplain, and A. N. Carroll, Tyler.
