Former Riverton Lime Co. Official Dies at 74 at Woodstock
Joseph Lougheed Carson, a resident of Riverton and Front Royal until a few years ago died Thursday night, June 21, at 6 o’clock in the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Carrington, in Woodstock, aged 74 years. Mr. Carson was treasurer of the Riverton Lime Co. for many years until his retirement in 1928, due to ill health. He was a man of exceptional literary culture, a thirty-second degree Mason and a leading authority on Masonic history and ritual. For many years he was a contributor to fraternal periodicals.
He was the son of the late Samuel Carson and Mrs. Annie Lougheed Carson and was born at Enniskillen, Ireland, and came to America in 1908.
Besides his widow who was Miss Jean McNeil of Sligo, Ireland, he is survived also by four daughters, Mrs. Dutton, wife of Dr. B. B. Dutton, Winchester; Mrs. George Carrington, Woodstock; Mrs. William Paxton, Harrisonburg, and Mrs. Percy Randolph, Berryville, and one son, Lieut Joseph Carson, Jr., of the United States Naval Air Service, now at Norfolk.
His brothers are William E. Carson, chairman of the Virginia Commission on Conservation and Development; Judge A. C. Carson, vice president of the Riverton Lime Co., and Charles W. Carson, all of Riverton. Mrs. M. C. McNeil, of Front Royal, is a sister.
Funeral services were held for the family at the home of Mrs. Carrington in Woodstock Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock, conducted by Rev. Jonathan Edwards of the Presbyterian Church, after which the remains were brought to Front Royal for interment in the family lot in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Rev. Mr. Edwards was assisted in the services at the grave by Rev. H. W. Shannon of Front Royal and Dr. Thomas Hooper of Culpeper, all Presbyterian ministers.
