Zachyr J. Compton Riverton, Virginia

Mr., Zachry J. Compton, river and rainfall observer at Riverton, VA., since May 13, 1907, was born at Taylor, Mo., on May 1 1874. He came to Bentonville, Va., when he was a year old and later attended public school there. Much of his spare time as a boy was spent aroung a telegraph office where he learned the essentials of the profession he has since followed. Mr. Compton began working in the telegraph department of the old Shenandoah Valley Railroad, now the Norfolk and Western Railroad, in 1894 and has completed 56 years of continuous service there. His wife, Mary Custers Mauck Compton, died about a year ago. Mr. Compton is a member of the following Masonic lodges: Unity Lodge 146, Front Royal, VA.; Hiram Royal Arch Chapter 45, Front Royal, Va.; Knights Templar Lodge 12, Winchester, Va.; Acca Temple, Richmond, Va.; and Virginia Consistory, Alexandria, Va.
