FRONT ROYAL Va. - Edwin H. Harper, a Front Royal businessman and civic leader, died Monday, July 31, 2000, in Heritage Hall. He was 83.

Born March 3, 1917 in Cambridge, he was the son of the late Edwin H. and Adah Bothum Harper. A War World II Army Air Corps captain, he received the Philippine Liberation Medal and a Bronze Star.

He owned teh McRoyal Laundry and Cleaners and the One Hour Martinizing Plant. He had served as president of the Front Royal Chamber of Commerce. In 1971, he became the Chamber's Executive Director, remaining in that post for over 14 years. He also was executive secretary of the Front Royal-Warren County Airport Commission and executive director of the Industrial Development Authority. He was president of the Front Royal Rotary Club, the Community Chest, the Chamber of Commerce, the Virginia Launderers & Cleaners Association, the Faculty & Parents Association Board of St. Margaret's School in Tappahannock, the Front Royal Little League, the board of Front Royal Country Club, Warren County Booster Club, and Calvary Episcopal Church Men's Club.

He also was a member of the American Legion Post 53 and was Treasurer of the Front Royal-Warren County Anti-litter Council. He served on the Board of the Warren County Council on Domestic Violence. A member of the Unity Lodge #146 AF & AM for more than 50 years, he also was active in the Shenandoah Dance Club. He served as both Junior and Senior Warden of Calvary Church.

Mr. Harper is survived by a daughter, Linda H. Marlow of Front Royal; two sons, Edwin T. and James A. Harper, both of Reston, Va.; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild. His brothers, Harold B. and Mace R. Harper, are deceased.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church in Front Royal Friday, Aug. 4. A committal service will follow at Prospect Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at Maddox Funeral Home, Front Royal, tonight from 7 to 8 p.m.
