Freemasonry & Labor Day: Is there a Connection?

Labor Day, initially celebrated on September 5th, 1882, now falls on the first Monday in September. The holiday’s origins are attributed to labor leaders Peter McGuire and Mathew Maguire. McGuire, a carpenter, expressed sentiments resembling Freemasonry, but neither he nor Maguire had verifiable ties to the fraternity.

Character of a Mason

The Farmers’ Almanac of 1823 emphasizes the distinction of a true Freemason, characterized by unwavering integrity, irrespective of laws or religious beliefs. Universal in his reverence, he respects all religions and endeavors to live harmoniously, guided by principles of restraint, honesty, and a commitment to avoid causing harm.

Desire

A Lodge faced misfortune when the air conditioner malfunctioned during a candidate initiation on a hot June evening. When the candidate expressed a desire for a beer, the Master discreetly suggested “light.” The candidate humorously requested a “lite beer,” alleviating the tension.

Barnyard Chapter

In a January 1933 comic panel, the original Mickey Mouse opens the Barnyard Chapter of DeMolay. Standing at a podium, he addresses his cartoon character friends, marking the beginning of the ceremony.
