In a heartfelt ceremony at Unity Masonic Lodge No. 146 on December 15, 2021, William “Bill” N. Wood was bestowed with a distinguished merit award that now carries his namesake. The creation of the William N. Wood merit award marks a significant moment in the lodge’s history, reflecting the deep respect and admiration for Brother Bill’s contributions to Freemasonry and the community.
The initiative to establish this honor began with Will Bryan, preparing to ascend to the role of the next master of the lodge. Inspired by Luray Virginias’ Lafayette Lodge No 137’s practice of recognizing outstanding members, Brother Bryan envisioned a similar accolade for Unity Lodge. The William N. Wood Meritorious Achievement Award will be annually presented to a brother nominated to the master for their outstanding contributions to Unity Masonic Lodge and the broader community.
Expressing his sentiments, Will Bryan shared, “Naming this award after Brother Bill was an honor. There is not a member of our lodge that has not learned something from Brother Bill.” This acknowledgment underscores the profound impact Brother Bill has had on the Masonic fraternity and his fellow brethren.
Originally slated for a presentation at Brother Bill’s residence, the overwhelming and positive response from Masonic brothers and Wood’s family prompted a relocation of the event to Unity Lodge. The anticipation and emotions ran high as Brother Bill arrived with his family at 6 pm.
The lodge room was filled to capacity, and the recently elected Worshipful Master, Will Bryan, led the presentation. With Bill Wood seated beside him, Bryan expressed admiration and gratitude for the invaluable teachings received from Brother Bill. Each brother present had, at some point, benefited from Bill’s wisdom and guidance.
Amidst the ceremony, handshakes and smiles conveyed the deep respect and camaraderie shared among the Masonic brothers. Photos captured the memorable occasion, preserving the essence of the evening’s significance.
