Winter Blues Met with Hot Meals and Helping Hands: Masons and Cops Warm Hearts at the Shelter

On a crisp January evening in 2023, the aroma of roasted ham and buttery stuffing filled the kitchen of Unity Lodge No. 146. Led by Worshipful Brother Will, a team of dedicated Masons – Lewie, Dale, Charles, and Terry – were busy preparing a hearty meal for their fellow community members facing the winter’s chill.

Will, the culinary mastermind behind the evening’s main course – a succulent glazed ham – expertly carved the meat while Charles, with practiced precision, prepared the warm, fluffy stuffing. Lewie, a familiar face at the Front Royal Thermal Shelter every Friday night, coordinated the delivery, ensuring their delicious spread reached its destination – the shelter’s new location at the Front Royal Presbyterian Church on Luray Avenue.

The Thermal Shelter, a beacon of hope for adult men and women during the winter months, buzzed with activity as the Masons arrived. Joining them were officers from the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, including the esteemed Sheriff Mark Butler himself. In a testament to community spirit, officers and Masons alike donned gloves, transforming into a united front of service.

Will and Charles, their teamwork honed in the shelters kitchen, took charge of cake duty, meticulously portioning slices of chocolate and vanilla, ensuring everyone received a sweet treat. Meanwhile, other volunteers from the shelter, their hands a blur of plates and utensils, ensured a smooth flow of nourishment.

As the evening unfolded, laughter mingled with the clatter of silverware and the warm glow of camaraderie. Photos captured the smiles and camaraderie of the Masons – Charles, Terry, Dale, and Will – beaming with the satisfaction of serving their community. Beyond the delicious meal and festive atmosphere, the Masons’ contribution transcended mere sustenance. It was a tangible expression of compassion, a reminder that even in the coldest winter months, the warmth of human connection can thaw the harshest realities.
