Unity Lodge No. 146 Plants Red Sunset Maple in Memory of Mr. Hughes

After three months of planning, Unity Lodge No. 146 proudly planted a Red Sunset Maple (Acer rubrum) in memory of Mr. Hughes, the father-in-law of one of our brethren. Standing at approximately 10 feet tall with a trunk measuring 1.5 inches in diameter, this tree will serve as a lasting tribute to a man who, although not a member of our Lodge, was deeply cherished by our brotherhood.

The Red Sunset Maple is renowned for its vibrant red foliage in the fall, making it a fitting addition to our town, which holds the Tree City USA designation. Each year, “leafers” from near and far are drawn to the stunning fall colors, especially along Skyline Drive. This tree will contribute to that beautiful display, and we hope it will be a welcoming sight for any brothers who stop by the Lodge during the fall months to enjoy the vibrant foliage. As it grows, it will not only honor Mr. Hughes but also enhance the natural beauty of our town, providing generations with a living memory.

In many ways, the planting of this tree mirrors the values of Freemasonry—growth, legacy, and brotherhood. Just as we are encouraged to build our lives on a firm foundation, this tree, too, will take root and grow strong, providing shade and beauty for generations to come. Its roots, like those of our Masonic teachings, are meant to endure and support others. As we plant it, we reflect on our shared commitment to supporting one another and leaving behind positive legacies for future brethren and our community.

The tree was planted in the field next to the Lodge, just 10 feet from the treeline, chosen for its ideal space to grow and thrive.

We are deeply grateful to the local Tree Stewards, who provided invaluable assistance throughout the three-month process. Their support began with helping us select the right location and continued with transporting the tree, providing tools like shovels, picks, wooden stakes, and tree straps, and assisting with the careful pruning of the tree to ensure it thrives. A special thank you goes to the Tree Stewards’ President, who visited the Lodge twice today to offer her expert guidance and support.

A particularly touching moment occurred when one of our brothers arrived under the pretense of an officers’ meeting, unaware that the planting had already begun. While the rest of the Lodge was inside painting bowls for the House of Hope Empty Bowl Supper event, he was invited outside to discover that the tree had already been planted. All that remained was for him to help by adding the final layer of dirt. His wife was present for the occasion, watching the tree being planted, and she joined him in helping to complete the task. Together, they added the final touches with care and attention, marking the moment with their love and support for the family and Lodge.

This Red Sunset Maple will stand as a living memorial to Mr. Hughes. Just as we, as Freemasons, are taught to be living stones in the temple of society, this tree will grow and stand tall, symbolizing strength, memory, and the enduring bonds of family and brotherhood. As it grows, it will continue to honor his memory while contributing to the beauty of our town. We look forward to watching it become part of the vibrant fall foliage that draws visitors each year to Skyline Drive.

May this tree grow strong, vibrant, and full of life, just as Mr. Hughes’ memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, and as the brotherly love of Freemasonry will continue to flourish in our Lodge. So mote it be.
