A Stone-Age Journey: Sassafras Quarry No. 3 at the Acca Shrine

This past Sunday, four brothers from Unity Lodge No. 146 made their way to the Acca Shrine in Richmond, Virginia, for a unique and unforgettable event hosted by Sassafras Quarry No. 3 of the Loyal Order of Water Buffalo. This co-ed, family-friendly gathering brought together Masons, Shriners, their families, and even the youngest attendee—a lively toddler girl who brightened the day with her laughter.

The centerpiece of the event was the Water Buffalo Degree, a humorous and lighthearted ritual inspired by The Flintstones. Throughout the ceremony, various clips from classic Flintstones cartoons played on screen, setting a nostalgic and playful tone for the degree. The animated antics of Fred, Barney, and their gang perfectly complemented the lively atmosphere, drawing laughter and cheers from the audience.

The candidates, including our four brothers, participated in a series of entertaining trials that left everyone in stitches. Two standout participants stole the show with their costumes—one arrived as a caveman, and the other hilariously embodied Dino, Fred Flintstone’s loyal pet dinosaur. These creative touches only added to the humor and camaraderie of the day.

As part of their initiation, each candidate was awarded the iconic blue Water Buffalo hat, complete with white horns on either side—a whimsical token of their new status. The sight of the newly initiated Water Buffalo members sporting their hats brought even more laughter and joy to the gathering.

Following the degree, everyone enjoyed a delicious feast that included BBQ, baked beans, coleslaw, and a special dessert crafted with Fruity Pebbles, perfectly tying into the Flintstones theme. It was a fitting end to a day dedicated to fun, fellowship, and family.

Unity Lodge extends its heartfelt thanks to Sassafras Quarry No. 3 and the Acca Shrine for hosting such a fantastic event. The mix of humor, nostalgia, and camaraderie was a perfect reminder of the importance of fellowship—not just among brothers, but with our families and communities.

We’re already counting down the days until next year’s Water Buffalo Degree. Who knows? Maybe a few more cavemen (and cavewomen!) will join the fun!
